7 months ago – Tue, Aug 22, 2023 at 06:03:16 AM

Hello from Brotherwise! We're always looking for new ways to unleash your inner villain, and now we've got the perfect way to hang out with your best baddies. Dungeon Kart, an all-new racing game set in the world of Boss Monster, just launched on Kickstarter!

Dungeon Kart transforms the multiplayer mayhem of kart racing into a turn-based tactical tabletop experience for 2-6 players. It's set in the world of Boss Monster and Overboss, but this time the bosses are racing to see who will rule the overworld! This game is just a ton of fun, and was featured in multiple "Best of Gen Con" lists after we revealed it earlier this month.

A look at Dungeon Kart on the table

Dungeon Kart is already packed with tons of content, including 6 unique Bosses, Speed Control Dashboards for 6 unique karts, 10 double-sided modular boards, a deck of 36 Spell cards, and so much more. The Kickstarter edition includes "Silver" and "Gold" pledge levels that provide really meaningful gameplay boosts, which you won't want to miss.

What About Overboss?

If you loved Overboss (and missed our last Kickstarter update), you're in luck! This year is the 10th anniversary of Boss Monster, and we've been celebrating with three big releases: a new edition of the original game, the Kickstarter for Dungeon Kart, and Overboss Duel!

The sequel to Overboss adds five new terrain types, a new Duel mode played on a shared board, all-new Hero and Spire tokens ...and it's all 100% cross-compatible with the original game. So if you missed it at Gen Con, order it today and get the exclusive Void tile set!

Thanks for checking out this update, and for all your support as we keep finding new ways to play tabletop games like a boss!

Overboss Duel pre-orders open in the US

Hello from Brotherwise Games! It's been a long time since you last heard from us, but we're writing today with big news: Overboss Duel is now available to pre-order in the United States!

It's an expansion, it's a sequel, and it's shipping next month in the US. If you pre-order this week at the Brotherwise Games Shop, we're offering a special price of $25. You can also get $5 off shipping with the code 5OFFSHIPPING at checkout.

If you're already psyched to pick this up, click here to pre-order. Otherwise, read on to find out what's new in Overboss Duel!

Duel Mode

Overboss Duel introduces an all-new way to play Overboss: Duel Mode. Specifically designed for 2 players, it's a head-to-head challenge where both players share one map. At the end of the game, you'll score points for every tile and token on your side of the map, just like a regular game of Overboss. But during the game you can play anywhere on the map. Don't see a tile that's ideal for your side of the board? Spend your turn playing a tile that messes with your opponent's plans instead!

The 6 new and updated Bosses optimized for Duel Mode

Overboss Duel is full of new powers and mechanics that take advantage of the shared map, including these new Boss cards! Shellda, Dr. Deadly, Baron Hex, and Umbra join new versions of King Croak and Belladonna. In Overboss Duel you'll be swapping, sliding, and stealing tiles in an intricate game of cat and mouse. We think you'll be impressed how this simple twist makes the game totally fresh, and like no other tile-laying game out there.

New Terrain Tiles

While Overboss Duel excels as a 2-player game, it also works as an expansion for the original, whether you're playing solo or multiplayer! Five new terrain tiles bring a ton of fun variety to your favorite overworld-building game.

Five new terrain tiles in Overboss Duel: Towns, Spawning Pools, Sunken Cities, Icy Peaks, and Roads.
  •   Icy Peaks are worth extra points when they have no adjacent Icy Peaks, and when you place one you can slide any tile up or down through any number of open spaces.
  •  Roads reward the player who builds the longest road, and allow you to move tokens around the map.
  •  Sunken Cities allow you to refresh a Portal or Tower. If they're next to water they're worth one point for every Portal, Tower, or Crystal in your lair.
  •  Spawning Pools allow you to place an extra token in your lair. They're worth a point for every unique token in their row.
  •  Towns are worth two points and spawn Heroes.

Wait, Heroes? That's right.

Heroes

During our Kickstarter campaign, we heard a lot of requests from backers. Many of these requests, like Solo mode and 5-player mode, ended up becoming stretch goals. But one took longer to figure out, and became one of our key goals for the expansion: adding Heroes.

A portion of the Overboss Duel board, showing Heroes in a player's lair and one hero in a Town

Whenever you build a Town, you spawn a Hero in that Town. If there's already a Hero in that Town, you spawn one in an adjacent tile... so they can quickly get out of hand! Whenever they spawn, they kill (replace) whatever monster was already there.

You might think that Heroes sound like a nuisance, and playing them on your opponent's side of the board is often a good move. But sometimes they're nice to have around ...so you can destroy them! A Hero can be killed by a matching monster, a band of monsters, or a Miniboss. (And once a Miniboss is placed on a tile, no more heroes can spawn there!) Every defeated Hero in your lair is worth a point!

If you're ready to crush some puny heroes, here's that pre-order link again.

Coming Soon

Our pre-order campaign involves shipping individual units from our small business to your home, not the kind of big distribution network we can leverage when we have a Kickstarter campaign.  That makes it prohibitively expensive to ship overseas, so our pre-order campaign is US-focused right now. But we're working with our international partners to make Overboss Duel available in other countries, and we'll keep you posted on those efforts!

Thank you again for making Overboss possible. As Tom Vasel from Dice Tower said when it first came out, "Man, this game is fun!" Over the past two and a half years we've played countless games with our friends and family. Overboss Duel takes everything we like about the original and dials up the head-to-head intensity, so we think you'll really enjoy it. Happy gaming, and have fun ruling your evil overworld!

Exciting Overboss news! And a new Kickstarter...
over 1 year ago – Thu, Dec 01, 2022 at 04:24:14 AM

Greeting Overbosses, we've got a lot of exciting news to share about your favorite tile-drafting game! And an all-new project to crow about. See below.

Overboss Duel

Overboss Duel

While Overboss has been making itself comfortable on your gaming tables, the kobolds at Brotherwise have been quietly working on an expansion. Overboss Duel is a 2-player version of Overboss that is played on a shared board.

Shared board for Overboss Duel

Place your tiles and tokens to maximize your score and disrupt your opponent's plans! Use Icy Peaks and Spire tokens to move tiles around the board. Spawn heroes into Towns, destroying your opponent's tokens and giving your monsters nice, juicy heroes to attack! Move tokens along roadways to steal them from your opponents! There's so much you can do with the new tiles.

New tiles

Best of all for you guys, all of the tiles and tokens in Overboss Duel are playable in the base game, and vice versa. Overboss Duel takes a game that already had a ton of replayability and boosts it to the max!

This will be a Summer 2023 release for us, and will go straight to retail, but we're likely to have a pre-order at the Brotherwise store first, and we'll make sure you're the first ones to hear about it!

Overboss Digital

Speaking of max replayability, Overboss is coming to Steam! Brought to you by our good friends at Goblinz Studios, Overboss digital is everything you wanted in a port of the tabletop standard, right down to the animated monster tokens!

We'll have more to share on this as we get closer to launch, but for now, check out the preview page here (along with rocking trailer) and add the game to your wishlist!

Empire's End Kickstarter

Lastly, we hope you'll take a look at our all new kickstarter! This one is for Empire's End, a reverse-bidding game from famed designer John D Clair, and it launched today!

Overboss news and our next Kickstarter
almost 2 years ago – Thu, Mar 31, 2022 at 01:11:40 AM

Hello, Overbosses! It's been a while since we were last in touch, and we wanted to let you know what's going on in the world of Brotherwise Games. Overboss continues to rule, and we have some exciting new projects coming soon.

Return of the King (Croak)

These days, there are so many games released that most titles are lucky to get strong sales for a few months before being replaced by something even newer. Overboss, now approaching its second year at retail, has managed to buck that trend.  Sales continue to be strong, and we see people posting about the game every day -- just check out #Overboss on social media. It's done so well that we're officially planning a sequel!

Overboss Duel will be a dual-purpose expansion. As the name implies, it stands on its own as a two-player version of the game, and it will be at a lower price point than the original. But it's also made with all of you in mind: it is 100% compatible as an expansion for 1-5 player games. Aside from Dungeons, the game's terrain tile types are all new. The image above gives you a sneak peek of Icy Peaks, Roads, and Towns. It even introduces a new Hero mechanic, which we've been working on since the original Kickstarter! That's all we can share for now, and we're currently working toward a Q1 2023 release.

A New Horizon

At Brotherwise, we're always working on new ways to play. Night of the Ninja and The Dragon Prince were great releases for 2021, and Call To Adventure: Epic Origins is coming out this summer. But our next big thing is something entirely new, and we think Overboss fans are going to love it.

Castles by the Sea is a sandcastle-building game for 1-4 players. It's a spatial puzzler like Overboss or Tiny Towns, but requires 3D thinking like the modern classic Santorini. In this game, you lead a kingdom of tiny Shorelings who make their homes on a windswept beach. Your goal is to build and rebuild sandcastles, collecting Sand Dollars for each turn your pieces stay on the board. To win, you'll need to puzzle out the perfect placement for your pieces, while doing your best to avoid titanic Hazards that stomp across the board.

With its clever gameplay and delightful artwork, Castles by the Sea is a truly unique experience. There's something really satisfying about building sandcastles with wooden blocks and meeples. But this isn't tied into a big entertainment license or established game, so we could use your help. If your curiosity is piqued, please follow our campaign to help us achieve a strong first day!

As always, we're grateful for your support and we can't wait to bring more fun to your table. Thanks for believing in Brotherwise Games!

Happy Holidays from Brotherwise!
over 2 years ago – Thu, Dec 02, 2021 at 02:00:02 AM

Greetings, Overbosses! As we head into the holidays, we wanted to share a quick update on all things Boss Monster, along with some other news from Brotherwise Games. Your support of Overboss last year helped make 2021 a great one for us, and we've been busy ever since.

The Year of Overboss

After an unexpected name change and some pandemic-related delays, Overboss shipped in the first quarter of this year. Since then, it's been a hit! GeekDad has named it as a Game of the Year Finalist, Tabletop Gaming Magazine awarded it the Best Intergenerational Game of 2021, and Dice Tower awarded it their Seal of Approval. (As Tom Vasel said: "Man, this game is fun!") We've never seen a game get such a consistently positive response across social media, and we keep hearing from people who love that they can play it with gamers of all ages and skill levels.

Based on this response, and consistently strong sales, we can now announce that we're developing an expansion! Tentatively titled Overboss Duel, it's an expansion to the original game that can also be played as a standalone 2-player experience. We're still in early playtesting, so we don't have a release date yet, but we'll keep you posted when we do!

A New Way to be a Boss

That's not the only new Boss Monster project for 2021! This spring we released Vault of Villains, which has seen strong sales as the perfect way to combine Boss Monster sets. And for the holidays we've released something completely different: the Boss Monster puzzle!

Like a lot of people, we rediscovered our love of jigsaw puzzles during the pandemic. But when we went looking for cool pixel art puzzles, we couldn't find any! So we made our own, and gave it a mystery twist: the picture you're building isn't exactly what's on the cover. It's a ton of fun for anyone who loves puzzles, and you can get it now at the Brotherwise Shop or on Amazon.

Our Next Adventure

As we send you this Kickstarter update, we're on the cusp of ending another Kickstarter. Call To Adventure: Epic Origins is the latest and greatest entry in our award-winning "hero-building card game" series. Epic Origins is a game where 1-4 players compete to craft the hero with the greatest Destiny score. At the same time, you'll be cooperating to defeat the Adversary. It's ton of fun, and the Kickstarter has been a big success!

Yes, that jewel-eyed statue is a King Croak cameo...

This campaign is over 950% funded and every stretch goal has been unlocked. For anyone who has played the original, this version is fully compatible with the original and adds exciting new mechanics like Heritage cards, Class cards, double-sided Adversaries, and a multi-session Campaign Mode. For anyone new to Call To Adventure, this game stands on its own and we think it's the perfect jumping-on point. If you love high fantasy and want a truly epic game night, check out this campaign

The Fun Continues

For an indie publisher like Brotherwise, Kickstarter campaigns are a huge part of what keeps us in business. Thank you for setting the stage for a successful 2021 by supporting Overboss last year, and we hope you'll stay in touch as we head into 2022 with some really exciting projects in store.

May your holidays be happy, fun, and full of gaming!
